I find the major difference between the two hemispheres is that on one hand you have the intellect and infrastructure on the developed side – but on the other down here you have the grassroots down to earth, heart felt vibes. The #1 thing for sure: is bands down here have to try hard to get gear, rehearse, record everything. Dare I say it is way to easy to get equipment in North America – being credit – credit – credit. Everyone can have anything they want and be a DJ or a Sound Engineer over night.

Its hard to tell if people are into my music here because “I have a nice accent” or good material (hoping the latter) but I can tell you on thing … the bands down here are great, the dreamers dream bigger and there is a somewhat genuine “sharing the successes vibe” amongst all the artists that I am kinda struck by.

When I left everyone in our music scene in Western Canada we were all milking the heck out of the small 1.1 Million population city that we have to work with. Seemingly, there wasn’t lots of room to move for most of our artists and there was plenty of toe stepping and getting each other’s faces/way. From that I could sense a frustration with the scene down there from the artists. It was good to leave when I did.

Down here there are 8 months of summer, 8 months of festivals, 8 million potential fans and almost 8 days a week there is shows, indoor/outdoor everywhere! The transition from the 8 months of winter has been eye opening – as Canadians we use that time for introspection, beer drinking, hockey talk and songwriting. Still to this day I say that is the missing link as to why Canadians have some of the best songwriters in the world – but take yourself out of that for a moment and now imagine the 8 months in paradise.

It’s not harder to write but it might be harder to write from the same place – the sun beaming through every crack in the curtains at 8am everyday brings rejuvenation to the soul of a Canadian Songwriter. Taking yourself out of your element has for most artist proved to be instrumental to their perspective and inner growth – so far so good – just thought I would share a bit of the feeling as I sit in the sun at this very moment awaiting an afternoon outdoor feast in a garden paradise.

I’m sure these little moments will be the ones that I will always end up chasing – that – and my never ending pursuit of the campfire jam should keep me busy for a while. All my love – thanks for reading this.
